Senator Portman Introduces New Bill to Make the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Permanent
“Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever individuals who are in the shadows are struggling to find meaningful employment,” said Senator Portman. “Encouraging employers to hire those who have the most trouble finding work is good policy, and while securing a five-year extension last year was a positive step, it’s critical that we make the Work Opportunity Tax Credit permanent.”

Work Opportunity Tax Credit Renewed for FIVE Years!
With the Covid-19 Relief Bill that passed and was signed into law on December 27th, the Work Opportunity Tax Credit has been extended through December 31, 2025. This is great news for our WOTC customers because they will not have to deal with any hiatus or wait for a renewal. As always we will keep you apprised of any changes or additional updates.

Understanding WOTC’s Target Groups: Ex-Felon
New hires who fall under one or more of WOTC’s Target Groups may make you eligible for a WOTC Tax Credit. Target Group #3 is the Ex-Felon. 69,137 individuals were hired with certification from this group in 2020. A “qualified ex-felon” is a person hired within a year of:
- Being convicted of a felony or
- Being released from prison from the felony
Work Opportunity Tax Credit Statistics for Connecticut
In 2020 the state of Connecticut issued 1,452 Work Opportunity Tax Credit certifications. Nationwide the Constitution State issued 0.09% of all WOTC Tax Credits in 2020. SNAP was Connecticut’s highest tax credit category with 76.8% of certifications for that category. Connecticut was also one of 12 States with WOTC backlogs that received Department Of Labor Grants last year.
